Cellucor Cor-Performance Beta-BCAA Review

Whether you are looking to build muscle, increase athletic performance or simply maintain muscle mass while dropping body fat, it’s important to consume plenty of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). Cellucor’s COR-Performance Beta-BCAA is a product that combines BCAAs with other proven muscle builders and performance enhancers: citrulline, beta-alanine and HICA. This makes COR-Performance BCAA an excellent product that stands out from most other BCAA products that typically only contain BCAAs. The additional ingredients listed above round out this product to help support muscle growth, energy and recovery. I think it’s a great product and personally use it as a pre-workout mix when I don’t want to take a stimulant based pre-workout, but still want a great workout.

Ingredient Profile

COR-Performance Beta-BCAA includes a combination of four key ingredients:
BCAAs = 5g (2.5g Leucine, 1.25g Isoleucine, 1.25g Valine)

Citrulline = 2g

  • Plays a role in optimization of blood flow to tissue (including skeletal muscle)
  • Promotes endurance and decreases fatigue
  • More info on Citrulline here

Beta-Alanine = 1.6g

A-Hydroxyisocaproic Acid (HICA) = .75g

  • HICA may potentially be an anti-catabolic agent.

Overall this is a solid ingredient profile. Branched chain amino acids (specifically leucine), citrulline and beta-alanine all play a role in muscle recovery and increasing muscular endurance. For this reason, it can be used a pre-workout for both weightlifting and endurance training. Just remember, there are no stimulants in the formula so if you’re looking for a mind-tweaking, earth shattering pre-workout experience, it may be best to use this more as an intra-workout beverage or as a post-workout recovery aid. Or you can mix/stack this with a pre-workout supplement to get the full effect. Just be careful you don’t mix it with another pre-workout that is heavy on beta-alanine as you might get more of the beta-alanine tingle than you’d like (see below for more explanation).

I’m not completely sold on the inclusion of HICA in the formula. While it has shown potential as a performance enhancing supplement, there have not been enough studies to confirm its effectiveness as a stand-alone ingredient. That being said, it will be very interesting to see HICA find it’s place among popular ingredients as more and more research is done.

One thing to note, beta-alanine may cause a skin-tingling sensation called paresthesia. I personally don’t mind this feeling, in fact it fires me up for a workout, but know that it can irritate some. I experienced paresthesia most times I took COR-Performance Beta-BCAA.

Taste and Mixability

Cellucor is known for their great tasting products. I thoroughly enjoyed my tub of Tropical Punch flavor. It was sweet, but still had a nice little tartness to it. It mixed flawlessly with cold water.

My Take/Conclusion

This is a great product. I had great, stimulant-free workouts on it when I used it as a stand-alone pre-workout, and some ultra-intense workouts when stacking it with a pre-workout. I highly recommend this as not just a recovery formula, but as a stackable intra-workout and pre-workout concoction.
