This last weekend I had the great pleasure of working out with our own Chief HUGEness Officer Alex Lewis. We met, confided, schemed, and came up with this intense leg workout that had us sore for days. The workout revolved around front loaded leg exercises but also included hamstring and glute dominant exercises as well. The sets and rep ranges were focused on building strength, but we focused on using explosive energy during the concentric phases of the exercises.

The squat is one of the most basic human movements. The deep squat (hips below the knees) is a natural resting position that many of us have lost the ability to perform through years of immobility, bad posture and the use of modern furniture. Consequently the body compensates by rounding the lower back during the squat. This can be a cause of back pain during and after exercise. We're here to show you how to fix it!

As Benjamin Franklin said and legendary basketball guru John Wooden championed, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”. To achieve maximal success in most activities, it is crucial to prepare both your mind and body. When Babe Ruth stepped up to the plate in game five of the 1932 world series and pointed to center field, he was so jacked up on caffeine and non-FDA approved pre-workout supplements that he blasted the next pitch over the center field wall. Well, probably not, but he unquestionably premeditated and visualized his success before it happened.

The world of aesthetics driven exercise has many believing that crunches are the vessel to a respectable six-pack. While crunches are an excellent, efficient exercise, they are often performed incorrectly. We do not want that washboard stomach to be complementing the Quasimodo posture, here are just a handful of terrific core exercises that help increase trunk stability and core strength without spinal flexion.

It is time to take your man strength to the next level. Since the dawn of man, the ability to carry a heavy object from Point A to Point B has been used as a measurement of one’s “manliness”. In survival situations and daily tasks, humans have been forced to carry heavy objects at their sides. Grip strength, consequently, is crucial to performing many physical activities effectively.

Like all of the winters in my short life, the winter of 2011-2012 was a bulk season. I ate more, lifted heavier, watched Arnold and Ronnie Coleman videos on repeat, and of course gained weight. A meathead at heart, I carried out this bulk season right through spring following a traditional bodybuilding/hypertrophy split: legs on Monday, chest on Tuesday, back on Thursday and shoulders on Friday. I did not perform many isolated arm movements besides a few triceps exercises at the end of chest day and bicep and forearms exercises at the end of back day. I made some decent gains in both strength and mass for the first few months as I continued to crush ze iron.
